serp-'s rasta tale

tl;dr version is unavailable so fo if u cba reading noob!

So, it’s been a year since I joined the Rasta community and I still love my time here. All you folks make it a friendly place for everyone and I want to thank the management (damage, arky, blanks, etc) for making it such a successful community and hopefully Rasta will soon become a highly respected gaming organisation. So, here’s my story:

I was in the GfG lineup in Twistedplay before I went to create GsG with a couple of decent gamers, thanks to Gomez. One of the members was danielsan and eventually he and I went on to join forces with bash, fumo and then a late pickup of dirtymagic/luke. We became Darkstyle’s first team and made quite a name for ourselves beating many good teams at that time. If I remember correctly, we were approached by Rasta Gaming (damage) via dirtymagic and that’s when I saw love at first sight. His powerful, comical but serious tone of voice persuaded us to join the Rasta organisation to form Rasta.rwp (Rasta rhymes with pasta… gonna have to give credit to dirtymagic for coming up with that ridiculous name...) We actually went from ED entry to top 5 in ED open within 4 weeks which I think is quite a feat! (This was when ED was actually active). All this hardcore practice was for the upcoming i36 LAN in April.

I36 was a new experience, being a sneaky lan dodger previously (*cough* serp_i34paid and didn’t go). We were seeded 16th or 15th, I can’t remember but it was quite low down and that’s when we were determined to prove ourselves and for me to get rid of my lan dodging cheating c*** status. The first group stage game was against FM sapphire (the old UK lineup) and fair play to them, gave us a big scare for the first 6-8 rounds by winning them straight out. We held it together and thanks to a marvellous T side and bash’s scout skills, we cruised this game and the rest (although barely won against arky’s rasta team… IRONY!!! Haha). (This game was actually shoutcasted on QuadV, have a watch cause it was a good game). Then came the tough double elimination brackets, with the first game against LLL (former fnatic) who were strong contenders for the title. We of course lost badly, although fumo did pull off a brilliant 4v1 clutch as T! We went to the lower bracket and won a few games, typically C4G (admire and dS) and a thrilling game against The Imperial with deathrow (with lots of pauses). We then lost to ZEN on Tuscan to finish a fine 9-12th position at a great event.

After the disappointing but satisfied loss, we met up with damage and the other rasta lads to celebrate and that’s when I had to tell them I had to go inactive. Being asian, studying is like my life so I had no choice.. and I delayed telling them because I thought it may bring down the team morale. That’s when it all fell apart and the team disintegrated. I joined #Rasta-Gaming (hash rasta) since I was quite inactive at the time and wanted to just help that team get going. My primary aim, however, was to help improve the players’ skill levels and that’s why I’m still in the team today. I would’ve joined a much more competitive team 2 years ago but now… I don’t like the competitive side of it anymore but to have fun and help people. I think it’s crucial to play with friends than those you think are decent players, otherwise you will inevitably fall out and implode. This is why the top end of the scene seems very unstable. Having a good relationship with the players is much more important than playing together with no chemistry. Arguments will arise and emotions fly everywhere. Whereas, good friends will argue and make up.

To be a good player at this game today, I really think learning the game and how the game works is more important than your aim and reaction times. You can easily do this by watching demos of experienced players and testing everything you saw in practice. If you don’t like watching demos, watch player movies.. they actually can help a lot. For example, the person peaking will have a bigger chance of killing the person standing still because of shadows, the model (you can see the arm of the camper), movement of the mouse (so it’s easier to aim since you’re moving your mouse to where you’re looking at), etc. Also, peaking closer to the camper gives you a bigger chance of not getting shot because even though you can be a bigger target, you seem to move much faster than when you peak from a distance. Being unpredictable gives you a huge advantage, especially CT positions. For instance, if the T’s smoke mid in inferno, you sit in them. They won’t see you (unless it’s only 1 smoke) but you may be able to see them or you can creep up behind them.

It’s these little things that make you a good player, rather than being an aimbot hacking lan dodger. But remember that all of this comes with experience, but you can learn all of this quickly by watching lots of demos and integrating different players’ play styles with your own.

This was my Rasta life story and my 2 cents on what makes a good player. ADIOS!
